A Powerful Earth Month Action Your Child Can Take
Earth Month is here, and Eco-Cycle is making legislative progress to reduce plastic pollution in Colorado - but we need your help!
HB21-1162, the Plastic Pollution Reduction Act, which will phase out single-use plastic bags and polystyrene (Styrofoam) take-out containers is making its way through the State Legislature. If the bill is passed by the House and the Senate, it will head to the governor’s desk to be signed into law. As of yet, we don’t know Governor Polis’ position on the bill.
We need your help to ensure his support so that he will sign the bill into law!
A powerful Earth Day action your kids can take is to send letters or drawings to Governor Polis about supporting the Plastic Pollution Reduction Act. We encourage handwritten letters or drawings because they are more personal, but any support for this bill is welcome. Sending Governor Polis a brief letter (or drawings, artwork, or photos) with a message about cleaning up our plastic pollution is another way for the children and youth in your life to make their voices heard. After all, it is our kids that will inherit this planet, and there is a lot that we need to do to correct the problems of the past and ensure a healthy future for them.
Will you contribute to this campaign by sending letters and/or artwork to Governor Polis by April 30th so we can build support for The Plastic Pollution Reduction Act at this critical time?
Below is a sample letter to give your kids an idea of what to write about.
Please send letters and/or artwork to:
Governor Jared Polis
State Capitol Building
200 East Colfax Ave, Room 136
Denver, CO 80203
(Note: Two sheets of regular notebook or office paper can be sent in a standard envelope with a regular 55 cent stamp, or a “Forever” stamp)
Sample letter: Please don’t copy this letter word-for-word - personalized letters always make the strongest impact!
Dear Governor Polis,
Happy Earth Month! My name is ____ and I am ____ years old. I live in _____ and I am writing to you today about the issue of plastic pollution in Colorado. I am concerned about the amount of plastic that litters our beautiful state. Plastics break down into microplastics that are harmful to the environment, wildlife, and even make their way into our food and water. My generation does not want this problem passed along to us, so we need to take action now. As governor, you have a lot of power to do something about this. Please support HB21- 1162, the Plastic Pollution Reduction Act. I know that Colorado will be healthier without single-use plastic bags and polystyrene (Styrofoam). With your support for this law, you can help our whole state make this change.
Thank you for your environmental leadership, and I trust that you will do the right thing for my generation.
With respect and kindness,
(First and last name, or last initial, and city of residence)
Thanks for sending a letter to Governor Polis, and supporting a more sustainable Colorado!
