Wrapping gifts creatively using comics, calendars and cloth

While Eco-Cycle will be accepting wrapping paper for a limited time after the holidays (see Holiday Guide), we encourage you to not use it since it is very difficult to recycle and there are some fun ways to avoid this use of paper. Get creative by choosing a reused/reusable alternative: comics, posters, maps, blueprints, calendars (all recyclable with your office paper), fabric, cloth gift bags, bandanas or a “Hollywood Box” with a pre-wrapped lid and separately wrapped bottom that can be reused without ripping the paper. Stop by the CHaRM and pick up unprinted endrolls of newsprint perfect for wrapping and decorating, and recyclable as newspaper.

Holiday cards: recyclable or not?

Dark green and red holiday envelopes (and flyers) cannot be recycled because of beater dyes in the paper that do not come out in the recycling process. Instead, choose only pastel or white envelopes. Colors on cards are generally printed on, rather than the fibers being dyed themselves, so dark colors on cards are not a concern for recycling. However, some cards are decorated with non-paper materials like aluminum foil, ribbons, glitter, etc. These cards cannot be recycled unless you’re able to remove the non-paper material.

Dark green & red envelopes vs. pastel or white envelopes

Many cards and envelopes are made of recycled paper; look for those containing the highest post-consumer content. The Boulder Book Store and health food stores are great places to find holiday cards made with recycled paper. Environmental organizations like the Sierra Club and World Wildlife Fund also sell post-consumer recycled cards. Go one step further and give the trees a break this holiday season by using e-cards. See www.care2.com for seasonal e-cards.

How to Recycle Holiday Light Strings

Holiday cords are recyclable with scrap metal at the Longmont and Boulder Drop-off Centers. Lights must be removed and are not recyclable. Please bundle the cords and tie them with the loose end so the string does not get caught in the recycling machinery.

What is corrugated cardboard?

Corrugated boxes can be recycled even if they have large staples or shiny graphics on them. All the Drop-off Centers throughout Boulder County (except Erie and Superior) accept corrugated cardboard. Corrugated cardboard is also accepted in the city of Boulder curbside program as well as some collection programs from private haulers.
