If you’ve
ever visited a landfill where Boulder County waste is
dumped, you’ve seen the overwhelming piles of construction
and demolition wood being wasted and plowed underground. If
you stay for just a few moments, you’ll see a parade of
trucks dumping construction materials that could have been
reused. As Boulder County continues to grow and new housing
and commercial developments are built, construction and
demolition (C&D) recycling is becoming a key factor to
reducing our waste and protecting our resources.
To address this need, the city
of Boulder, with support from Boulder County, has stepped
forward to help the construction industry and homeowner
do-it-yourselfers reduce disposal costs and recover some of
their recyclable material. With funding from the city of
Boulder Trash Tax, the city recently implemented a “Clean
Wood Waste” drop-off site, located at Western Disposal’s
transfer station at 5880 Butte Mill Rd. |

So now if
you’re building new or remodeling, simply separate out your
clean dimensional lumber, cutoffs, and pallets from other
construction waste materials. You’ll be saving money,
increasing waste diversion, and utilizing recyclable
resources. Homeowners
in the city of Boulder can dispose of their “Clean Wood
Waste” for free, and unincorporated Boulder County residents
can use the program at a discount that amounts to 40% less
than the price to landfill. Construction companies working
within the city limits of Boulder can dump “Clean Wood
Waste” materials for half off the standard landfill tipping
fee.
Keep in mind that many other
materials common to construction and demolition projects are
also recyclable. Scrap metal can be recycled at both the
Longmont and Boulder drop-off centers, and corrugated
cardboard is accepted at these and many other drop-off
centers throughout Boulder and Broomfield counties. Used
building materials in good condition can be donated or
purchased at ReSource 2000, located just north of the
Boulder County Recycling Center on 63rd Street.

where to recycle C&D material, such as concrete, asphalt, or
other C&D items, see the Eco-Cycle “Guide to Hard-to-Recycle
Materials” online at
